The aim of this web site is to provide a comprehensive study of Class 47, or Brush Sulzer Type 4, locomotives.

The study begins in the early 1960's and ends in the present day; a period of time that encompasses the development and introduction of the class, the diverse range of duties which the class performed so well, an array of technical variations; and a profusion of re-numberings, namings, de-namings, re-namings, and finally: re-buildings, the scrapyard, or preservation.
